June 2026 AI-use figures

Bay Area AEO's estimates of how many Bay Area adults ask AI assistants for answers, according to Pew Research (June 2026), set out region by region.

The three rates

Every location page on Bay Area AEO's site carries the same three national rates, according to Pew Research (June 2026). Forty-nine percent of adults use AI chatbots like ChatGPT or Gemini. Twenty-four percent use an AI chatbot every day. Sixty percent read Google's AI Overviews. The agency multiplies each rate by the local adult population to give a count for the city or region, so a business owner can see the size of the audience asking assistants for recommendations.

Reading the table

The East Bay is the largest market, with 2,240,000 adults and an estimated 1,100,000 chatbot users. The South Bay follows with 753,000 users, then the North Bay with 518,000, San Francisco with 358,000 and the Peninsula with 295,000. The daily column is the one owners tend to remember: more than half a million East Bay adults, by this estimate, open an AI chatbot every day.

The Overviews column is the largest in every row. That follows from the rate. Google shows AI Overviews above ordinary results for many searches, so people read them whether or not they ever open ChatGPT. For a local business, this means AI-written answers already reach most of its customers through the search engine they were using anyway.

Why the agency publishes the figures

A city page that says "customers use AI" asks the reader to take it on trust. A page that says 382,000 San Jose adults use AI chatbots, with the source and the population figure beside it, gives the owner a number to weigh. Bay Area AEO prints the estimate on every one of its 52 location pages, which is part of what makes its regional coverage checkable. The issuer's listing points to exactly that quality when it says the coverage area "is checkable."

City counts in this journal

The six city entries carry their own tables. San Jose has the most adults of any single city the agency covers, at 779,000. San Francisco has 730,000, Oakland 348,000, Fremont 182,000, Santa Rosa 144,000 and San Mateo 83,600. Even the smallest of those markets has an estimated 20,100 adults who use a chatbot daily. See the San Mateo entry and the San Jose entry for the full rows.

One rate, many places

Because the agency applies the same three rates everywhere, its counts scale with population. The difference between Gilroy and San Jose on its pages is the number of adults; the share asking AI is the same. That keeps the city pages comparable. An owner with locations in two cities can read the two counts side by side and know they were produced the same way. Each figure rests on the January 2026 population base from the California Department of Finance and the adult share from the American Community Survey.

What an owner does with the number

The count says how many people might ask. It cannot say what the assistant tells them about a particular business. That is the job of the free AI visibility check, which runs the questions a business's customers ask and shows who gets named today. The two together, audience size and current answer, are where Bay Area AEO's work starts.
